kikumu Environment and intergrated wild life management kasese

CLIMATE CHANGE IN KASESE UGANDA

1.  Main objectives:
- building capacity of people living around Lake Edward and George to engage in reforestation, green belt and wetlands conservation specifically in kasese Uganda
- increase Biodiversity nature through reducing loss and extinctions as niches are closed out by temperature increases and pressure on natural resources
- Increased food insecurity through conservation and planting of fruits, herbal plants and green plants.
- increase skills in controlling rates of erosion and land degradation because of increased mean rainfall or higher intensity events;

 - Behavior change in nature conservation thus Shifts in areas affected and increased incidence in some areas of diseases, such as dengue fever, malaria and water borne diseases associated with floods
- build capacity to evaluate risks of flood damage to infrastructure, property and settlements;
- Shifts in the viable area for coffee cultivation with increased temperature;
- Reduction in poor grazing, agriculture potential within the cattle corridor;

2. Main actions and means involved:

Project is expected to have five components, details of which are presented below

  • environmental planning component
-socio economic and natural resources surveys
- needs assessment
- Village, parish and sub-county environmental management planning
- Community-based tourism planning and development
- Environmental impact assessments (EIAS)
- Community group formation, dynamics and sustainability activities

  • sustainable resource use and Energy Conservation component
-          wetlands conservation
-          lake region conservation
-          soil and water conservation
-          nursery management techniques and seedlings production
-          agro forestry, woodlot development, herbal tree planting and homestead tree planting
-          fruit tree production
-          apiary
-          mining and industrial zone tree planting
-          aquaculture
-          development of potable water

  • environment protection component
-          protection of water sources
-          rural sanitation (ventilated improved pit latrines promotion)
urban environment protection ( solid waste disposal, green belts, pollution etc)

  • environmental awareness and gender issues component
-          public awareness campaigns
-          training of local population
-          support to district wildlife clubs
-          creating awareness of the property ownership and credit access provision of the land
-          promoting participation of women in environment programmes
-          gender data collection and analysis

  • disaster preperedness component
-          creating awareness of natural disasters
-          promoting disaster mitigation measures
-          building institution capacity for disaster preparedness management
-          drought, hailstone and wind program analysis

3. Expected results and outputs:

PLANNING OBJECTIVE (2YEARS)

To contribute to effort to achieve sustainable use of natural resources and reverse the trend in environment degradation.

Intermediate objectives
v      To support communities in sustainable natural resources management while improving their quality of life
v      Creation of awareness within the communities in the Kasese District concerning sustainable natural resources management; and
v      Reduction of the communities’ pressure on their environment through promotion of improved natural resource management activities

Integrated community conservation Development project (ICCDP)
Intergraded community conservation development project for Kasese District Intergraded community conservation development project ct was justified on the following:
    1. The majority of the population in the district (ca.94%) lives in the rural areas and depends, directly and indirectly, heavily on its surrounding natural resources to meet its needs
    2. It can be predicted that the population will continue to grow;
    3. Natural rresources play an important role in the development process opportunities for the people in the diocese
    4. The diocese offers a structure to reach and support the population, in all corners of the diocese;
    5. Environmental organizations which are existing already and are focused on conservation through development operate only at the boundaries of the natural parks and will have little impact on the other areas covered by the District.
    6. Up until then lack of awareness and or interest in environmental issues among a number of district politicians, has resulted in little support, both if finance and means, to several environment related departments and so, hindering them from executing their function properly; and
    7. By the implementation of the ICCDP the diocese has the opportunity to link up with guidelines set by national environment management authority (NEMA)

The ICCDP was to direct its activities to women’s groups; community-based organizations CBOs) and associations (CBAs); user groups2; and youth groups. The first TWO years of the ICCDP was to be used to identify methods and strategies of intergrated community conservation development project. External evaluation Views proposed after the first two years of the ICCDP to see if there would be need to revise  and adjust strategies and methods

B. agriculture development project (ADP)

Towards the end of the concept of the ICCDP was modified into an agricultural development project with environment as a sub-project. .  The other sub-project were: nutrition, agro-industry, and training.
The focus of the environment sub-project of the ADP was to be the implementation of a programme of sustainable environmental management involving a number of sectors, especially agriculture, forestry, water and health. The proposed components of the environment sub-project were to yield results

v      Homestead fuel consumption.
-          Increase reforestation,afforestation by individuals on their own farms
-          afforest ion on common land through community forestry efforts
-          use of improved wood-and paraffin- burning stoves
-          increase herbal tree planting
-          green belt conservation

-In put of local leaders is to be considered in development of climate change.
-User groups are a number of persons who don’t normal form a group but may be considered a category as they execute the activity, for example, bakers and brick-makers, with whom activities can be started to reduce fuel wood consumption.
-Supply of seeds and seedlings
- Feasibility study report and proposals for agricultureal development- environment sub—project (revised).
-promotion of ‘’intensive’’ agriculture over ‘extensive’ thus increasing yield per unit area of land
- Identification/ promotion of varieties, edible parts of which have a rapid cooking quality

*      soil erosion and water pollution
-          terracing of hillsides already under cultivation, using oxen where possible
-          making bunds along the contour and binding them with grass
-          application ofa groforestry practices
-          afforestation of slopes
-          exaction of proper pit latrines
-          protection of springs and other water sources

v      intensification of cropping enterprises
-          terracing
-          grass bunds
-          gabions
-          agroforestry
-          ground cover
-          water pollution

c. the environment and sustainable agriculture project (ESAP)

Activities are to be carried out under the name integrated community conservation development project
The activities, the ICCDP was changed to the environment and sustainable agriculture project, as 2- year endeavours

The goal of the project is to enhance the productivity of the environment and sustainable social and economic growth. The overall objective of the project is to support communities in sustainable natural resource management, in order to improve human welfare. Specific effects of the project are:

  • increase support community-managed tree nurseries and tree planting
  • increase  promotion agro forestry and crop diversification;
  • to promote adaptation of soil and water conservation techniques;
  • to promote the use of fuel-efficient cookstoves and methods; and
  • to increase environmental awareness
  • change behave of communities in nature conservation

The ESAP conducts training and carries out extension work covering the following areas
  • tree nursery establishment and management;
  • soil and water conservation and management;
  • production and popularization of fuel-efficient cook stoves;
  • beekeeping as an income generating activity;
  • environment education for LC executives; and
  • mass awareness campaigns

In addition, the project also assists its clientele through provision of advice and in some cases inputs for the practice of agro forestry, woodlot development, homestead tree planting and soil and water conservation. Also, in partnership with other institution, the project undertakes activities covering crosscutting issues
